Belgium Increases Its Climate, Energy Ambitions for 2030
The Commission released its assessment of Belgium’s final updated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), offering country-specific guidance on implementing policies and taking further steps to align with the EU’s 2030 targets.
While acknowledging that Belgium has increased its ambitions compared with earlier drafts, the evaluation noted that gaps remain in key areas such as renewables and energy efficiency measures.
Belgium is reportedly on track to meet its 2030 commitments under the EU’s “Effort Sharing Regulation” and is expected to exceed targets under the Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) framework, provided that all planned measures are fully implemented.
The Commission also highlighted Belgium’s initiatives to strengthen energy security, including diversifying gas supplies, maintaining stable consumption levels, and exploring alternative energy sources such as hydrogen.
This country-specific evaluation is part of a broader EU-wide review of the final updated NECPs submitted last year, which showed significant progress among member states toward the bloc’s 2030 climate and energy objectives. The Commission reiterated its call on Poland, the only EU member state yet to submit its final plan, to do so promptly.
It further pledged to continue assisting member states in closing remaining gaps, securing financing, and refining climate and energy strategies, according to reports.
