Rising drug-related violence sparks public safety concerns in Belgium
The Flemish Peace Institute (Vlaams Vredesinstituut) recorded 184 firearm-related incidents in 2024, with shots fired in 65% of cases. These incidents resulted in at least 20 deaths and 81 injuries, with Brussels identified as the primary hotspot for gun-related violence.
Researchers attribute the surge in violence to heightened competition within the Belgian drug market, driven by rising demand, expanded production, and increased imports. This environment has attracted new criminal groups and intensified rivalries, contributing to more frequent and severe clashes.
The widespread availability of firearms remains a pressing issue. Despite stricter gun laws introduced in 2006, authorities continue to struggle with illegal weapons circulating, often linked to drug trafficking networks.
While Brussels, Antwerp, and parts of Limburg currently see the majority of violent incidents, experts warn that the problem could spread geographically if structural issues remain unaddressed.
The escalation comes amid growing pressures on Belgium’s police and judiciary, including recruitment challenges, budget constraints, and rising caseloads. Local authorities have cautioned that their capacity to manage the situation may be further strained if current trends persist.
